As you prepare for your vacation in Puglia, you’ve likely added all the must-dos to your itinerary: soaking in the gorgeous olive tree-lined countryside, lounging on some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, and indulging in daily servings of fresh burrata. But, did you know that Puglia has all of this and more to offer?
This region is one of my all-time favorite destinations. While every moment here is bound to be amazing, there are some unique experiences that I highly recommend adding to your bucket list for Italy’s best coast. Here are 7 must-do activities to add to your Puglia itinerary to make your Italian adventure truly unforgettable:

1) Hike to a Secluded Beach in the Gargano Region
Our list starts in my favorite region of Puglia: the Gargano Peninsula. Located in the “spur” of Italy’s boot, in Puglia’s northernmost region, you’ll find dramatic landscapes, hidden grottos, and stunning beaches.
One of my favorite ways to explore the coastline of this ruggedly beautiful region is by hiking to one of its secluded beaches.
Exploring the Gargano coastline this way creates an incredible adventure to add to your Puglia itinerary that combines effort with the reward of serene, breathtaking shores.
For this unique experience, you can choose from a variety of trails, ranging from easy to challenging, that offer different lengths and difficulties. Some paths wind through lush forests before revealing dramatic cliffs and beaches below, while others start at the forest’s edge and quickly lead to the coast.
Two of my favorite trails are those leading to Baia delle Zagare and Spiaggia di Portopiatto. These hikes reward your efforts with two of the most incredible beaches I’ve ever seen, where you can relax in the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea.
2) Rent a Boat in Vieste, Italy
While you’re adventuring in the Gargano Region, my all-time favorite must-do activity in Puglia is to rent a boat in Vieste, Puglia.
Vieste, located on the eastern tip of the Gargano Peninsula, is a picturesque coastal town with a boat harbor and rental boats galore that gets you access to the awe-inspiring views along the Gargano coastline.
The Private Boat Rental Experience
Start your trip by renting a boat from one of the local companies in Vieste and set sail heading south from the harbor, along the picturesque coastline. You’ll discover hidden coves, sea caves, and secluded beaches as you navigate.
No boating license is required for small boat rentals, so you can enjoy the freedom of being your own captain. Alternatively, you can also hire a captain if you prefer and feel more comfortable.

Renting a boat in Vieste offers a unique perspective of the Gargano coastline, allowing you to explore its hidden gems privately and at your own pace. Stop wherever you like for snorkeling, picnicking, or simply soaking in the beautiful scenery.
3) Make your Own Orecchiette
As you continue your journey south along Puglia’s coast, you’ll likely stop in Bari, the vibrant capital of Puglia.
While exploring Bari, make sure to take the opportunity to visit the pasta-making “nonnas” (grandmothers) on Strada Arco Basso, who have been crafting pasta in the streets for centuries.
But while you’re there don’t just watch—join in and learn the art of making orecchiette yourself.
The “Little Ears” Experience
In your cooking class, a knowledgeable instructor, often a local nonna, will guide you through the process of making this iconic “little ears” pasta by hand. You’ll mix, knead, and shape the dough, mastering techniques that have been passed down through generations.
This hands-on experience is a must-do activity for Puglia because it not only teaches you how to make delicious pasta but also connects you with Puglia’s culinary traditions. Plus, you’ll be rewarded at the end by getting to enjoy a homemade meal and a chance to savor your delicious handmade pasta served with a refreshing glass of “vino della casa” (house wine).
4) Scuba Dive in Monopoli
Monopoli, with its stunning beaches, picturesque harbor, and charming old town, is one of my favorite towns in Italy and a must-stop on any Puglia itinerary.
While visiting, I highly recommend taking a scuba diving trip to get the ultimate view of Puglia’s crystal-clear blue waters, explore the underwater world, and make your trip truly memorable.
An Under-the-Sea Experience
Monopoli offers a range of dive experiences for every level, from beginner reef dives that don’t require any certification to advanced wreck dives at 42 meters or more.
During our visit, we dove with Vito at Diving Subinastinenza and could not recommend the experience more.
Vito makes your trip super easy as he is flexible with scheduling and provides everything you need for an unforgettable dive. He’s also an excellent guide, pointing out fascinating marine life and keeping the vibe light and fun, ensuring everyone has a fantastic time.
Note: Vito speaks very little English, but this was no big deal as communication underwater is universal anyway 🙂.
5) Bike Your Way Through Puglia
For an alternative way to explore Puglia’s coastlines and countryside, consider taking a bike tour through Puglia.
The region’s stunning scenery, combined with plenty of opportunities to stop and explore hidden beaches and charming villages, makes embarking on an adventure on two wheels an ideal way to explore Puglia and a must-do on your Puglia itinerary.
As a bonus, it’s also an eco-friendly way to explore the region and truly immerse yourself in its natural beauty without leaving much of a footprint behind.
Coastal vs Countryside Experience
There are many companies in Puglia offering bike tours of the region, or you can rent your own bike and explore on your own. Bike routes throughout Puglia range from being almost completely flat to very hilly with steep climbs. Some of my favorite 1-day routes include:
Polignano a Mare to Monopoli (Coastal):
With approximately 23 km of mostly flat coastline with occasional hills, this scenic route showcases the dramatic coastline and offers frequent opportunities to discover hidden beaches, and serene coves, and enjoy two of my favorite historic and charming seaside towns.
Alberobello to Locorotondo (Countryside):
Also, just a relatively short 20 km ride, is the ride from Alberobello and Locorotondo featuring no shortage of rolling hills and charming trulli houses.
This picturesque route takes you through a super peaceful atmosphere where you are surrounded by lush vineyards and olive groves, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the serene countryside.
6) Sip Orange Wine in a Terraced Garden
As you head to southern Puglia—perhaps after a scenic bike ride along the coast as suggested above—there’s really no better way to refresh yourself than with a cool glass of local Puglian wine.
Among the plethora of cafes and bars to do this in southern Puglia, my all-time favorite is L’Ortale Ristoro in Otranto, and it is a must-stop on any Puglia itinerary!
A Secret Garden Experience
L’Ortale is special because it features a beautiful hidden garden out back of the restaurant, ideal for enjoying a glass of wine or a “caffe leccese” (almond coffee) amidst lush greenery and vibrant flowers.
While there, I highly recommend trying a bottle of locally-produced orange wine, such as Confidenziale by Amastuola.
The unique wine, combined with the beautiful surroundings and tranquility of the terraced garden, creates a truly special experience, perfect for unwinding and soaking in the beauty of Puglia.
7) Sunbathe Like a Local in Otranto
No trip to Puglia is complete without visiting a variety of the stunning beaches that the region has to offer.
But, while there are many pristine spots to choose from (see my article on 6 Must Visit Beaches in Puglia for other recs) I highly recommend staying in Otranto and heading to Via dei Bastioni Beach to give you the full Italian beach experience.
An Authentically Italian Experience
This beach is a must-do activity because it’s right in the heart of town and is a genuine local hangout. You’ll feel like you’re truly part of the community, soaking up the sun with the locals and embracing the laid-back Italian lifestyle.
The unique beach location, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant atmosphere where you can enjoy the sun while mingling with locals is an unforgettable part of any Puglian adventure.
